For school sports grounds, community parks, training centers and professional stadiums, selecting the correct running track system directly affects athlete safety, service life, maintenance cost and compliance with international standards. There are four mainstream synthetic track solutions widely used in global projects: breathable track, sandwich track, mixed-type track and prefabricated roll track. Each has unique strengths, limitations and ideal application scenarios. This guide helps you make a clear procurement decision based on local climate, budget and usage requirements.
1. Breathable Running Track
The breathable track is a porous structure made of SBR rubber base bonded with PU binder, sprayed with EPDM granular top layer. Water can drain through the whole layer quickly, so it is less prone to bubbling and blistering in hot, rainy and humid regions such as Southeast Asia, Africa and tropical islands.
- Advantages: Competitive price, fast on-site installation, low requirement on ground foundation, good shock absorption, excellent water permeability, eco-friendly formulation available.
- Limitations: Not suitable for professional elite competitions; surface particles may wear faster under extremely high-frequency use.
- Best for: Primary & secondary schools, community jogging tracks, park fitness trails, low-to-medium budget projects in rainy areas.
- Certification: Meets EN 1177, standard school safety requirements.
2. Sandwich Running Track
Sandwich (two-layer) system consists of a black SBR elastic base layer and a sealed PU coating with broadcast EPDM granules on top. It is non-porous and relies on site drainage slope for water runoff. It is our most popular mid-range export option for balancing cost and performance.
- Advantages: Higher density and wear resistance than breathable track, stable colour, good anti-slip grip, consistent elasticity, moderate investment.
- Limitations: Requires proper foundation slope and drainage design; higher cost than breathable type.
- Best for: High schools, university training grounds, sports clubs, medium-standard athletic fields.
- Certification: Can reach IAAF-compliant performance for regular training and local events.
3. Mixed-Type (Hybrid) Running Track
Mixed track is constructed by mixing PU resin and rubber granules evenly for the whole elastic layer, with EPDM top dressing. It is dense, compact and high-performance, widely used for municipal stadiums and high-level training venues.
- Advantages: Outstanding tensile strength, excellent wear resistance, stable rebound, strong anti-aging and UV resistance, long service life, low maintenance.
- Limitations: Higher material and construction cost; non-permeable, reliable drainage system is mandatory.
- Best for: City stadiums, elite training bases, venues hosting regional competitions, high-traffic university athletics fields.
- Certification: Qualified for IAAF competition standard options.
4. Prefabricated Roll Running Track
Prefabricated track is factory vulcanized rubber rolls, delivered as finished sheets and glued on-site. The whole production is controlled under factory environment, free from on-site mixing errors.
- Advantages: Consistent thickness and physical performance, ultra-fast installation, minimal on-site chemical mixing, very low particle shedding, long service span, easy repair.
- Limitations: Highest unit cost among four systems; higher transport cost for large projects; stricter requirement on flat base.
- Best for: Professional competition stadiums, international event venues, high-end sports complexes, projects with tight construction schedules.
- Certification: Premium IAAF certified solution for top-level athletics meets.
Quick Selection Guide
- Tropical rainy climate, tight budget, school / community → Breathable Track
- Mid-budget, high school & club training, balanced durability → Sandwich Track
- Regular competitions, heavy daily use, long-term value → Mixed-Type Track
- Elite events, premium stadiums, strict performance consistency → Prefabricated Roll Track
